Part of the problem: St. George's — like so many other Episcopal churches — have strayed from a main strength of that denomination. St. George's is "high church" to a fault; along the way, it has forgotten the great virtue of Common Prayer. What results is something that is sometimes just a bit confusing. It will be interesting to see if this can be overcome, in the process making things more accessible to a wider audience — and if that message can be promoted.

The church itself is beautiful. The basic "God-barn" from colonial times has been kept up, and additions made that are truly lovely. A "Lady chapel" added some years back is so designed as to present a background to the main church's sanctuary. Over the years, the church has built extensively and handsomely, and these buildings offer interesting opportunities for re-purposing to changing times.

It is an aging congregation, though. The altar boys are my age (really old) or older. Youngsters are noted by their absence, generally. [The ones who do show up are clearly committed to family and not "churchy" — nice kids.] This is too bad, because St. George's has facilities that could make it a good place for young people of various ages to hang out and Do Things. There are leadership areas for younger adults — and the facilities and general will to Do Things that broaden those options.

St. George's is, taken altogether, a nice example of both actual and potential Episcopal-Church Christianity. These are decent folks who are actively committed to being better than they have been. Like the best of their ilk, they are pretty much accepting of other folks' peculiarities. Like lots of Episcopal churches, they've been hit hard by the current general decline in "churchiness" — they seem determined to not let that diminish St. George's presence as a community of believers and a force for Christian values in their community.
